Synopsis

This comprehensive biographical documentary details the meteoric rise and dramatic fall of Whitney Houston via numerous accounts from people in the pop icon’s close circle and also through a series of previously unpublished video recordings. The filmmaking duo describe the singer’s childhood in Newark, New Jersey, a city beleaguered by racial unrest; her complicated relationship with her mother, an American gospel legend who immersed herself in building and, above all, influencing her daughter’s career; and Whitney’s equally turbulent and destructive association with singer Bobby Brown. The film also offers a fascinating perspective on both the glitz and the pitfalls of the popular music scene. Viewers whose notion of Whitney Houston derives more from The Bodyguard than from monitoring her career will find one testimony particularly curious, from someone who played a key role in her life: her actual bodyguard, David Roberts.
