In a dark future, the only enclave of life is a corrupt American megalopolis, where order is maintained by a group of Judges. Two of them, the incorruptible Dredd and the comely rookie Cassandra Anderson, find themselves battling the arch villain Ma-Ma in an unrelenting slaughter-fest. A pastel-colored 3D action movie that provides a reliable dose of suspense and deadpan catchphrases.

Synopsis

In a dark future, the world is a dead wasteland and the only enclave of life is a thoroughly corrupt megalopolis on the Atlantic coast ruled by violence, lawlessness and chaos. Order is maintained by so-called Judges – armed knights of justice who assume the roles of police, judge, jury and executioner all in one. One such hero is the incorruptible Dredd (Karl Urban) – dressed in impenetrable armor, his face half-hidden by a helmet, equipped with the latest technology, the corners of his mouth turned down in a permanent frown. When he and rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson are out on their first mission together, they get trapped in a high-rise that is home to the arch villain Ma-Ma, distributor of the pernicious drug known as Slo-Mo. This pastel-colored 3D adaptation of the comic-book series, which has been coming out since the late 1970s, is full of action, blood and comic-book prototypes. A brutal and unrelenting slaughter-fest clearly inspired by the cult film Blade Runner, Dredd provides a reliable dose of suspense and deadpan catchphrases.

About the director

Pete Travis

Pete Travis (Stalford, UK) is a British director who devoted his early career primarily to television production. He is responsible for several episodes of "Cold Feet" (1999) and contributed to numerous other series and television shows. He directed six episodes of "The Jury" (2002) and also the feature film Omagh (2004), which won the Discovery Award in Toronto and a BAFTA for Best TV Drama. Travis’s first studio film, Vantage Point (2008), with Dennis Quaid, Forest Whitaker, Matthew Fox and Sigourney Weaver, was a box-office hit. His subsequent Endgame (2009) was shown at Sundance. Dredd (2012), an adaptation of the famous comic-book series issued since the late 1970s, saw Travis’s return to the festival in Toronto.
