Section: Tribute to Ben Rivers
A tribute to the horror masters of the 1970s and 1980s, who terrified audiences with creeping suspense – and images of exploding heads. This movie compilation presents all this and much more as it unveils the strategy of the genre and lovingly compiles shots from dozens of films, many of which achieved cult status.
What’s going on in the dark behind those doors? Why is there a character from a completely different movie? And don’t all of these characters have something in common? At the very least, they share the horrors the director has in store for them in the end. The most cinephilic entry in Rivers’ filmography is a playful tribute to a genre he was exposed to as a child and which awakened his interest in film. Drawing on dozens of works by Lucio Fulci, John Carpenter, Dario Argento, and other horror legends, he knits together an entirely new story, and knowledgeably reveals the structure and emotions underlying similar works, thereby highlighting the transformative magic enabled by the medium of film.
